Google launches priority inbox, unveils spam killer

A new feature for its Gmail service will automatically filter the most important messages from spam, Google has announced.

Priority emails will be placed at the top of the inbox - while others will drop to the bottom.

The 'Priority Inbox' function is designed to help users manage hundreds of emails received daily, reports the Daily Mail.

The new application splits the inbox into three sections: 'Important and unread', 'Starred' and 'Everything Else'.

Announcing the new feature, Google stated: 'As messages come in, Gmail automatically flags some of them as important
'Gmail uses a variety of signals to predict which messages are important, including the people you email most and which messages you open and reply to.'

Google said Priority Inbox will be rolled out to all Gmail users, including those who use Google Apps, over the next week or so.

Google described its new filtering system as 'your personal assistant, helping you focus on the messages that matter without requiring you to set up complex rules'.

Messages that initially start appearing in the new priority box will be based on an algorithm which looks at factors such as the identity of the sender, phrases in the message and whether the sender is an individual or a company.

The plan is that emails from friends and family will appear above less important messages.

Gmail was launched by Google in April 2004 and now has an estimated 146 million monthly users worldwide.

‘I once sold lottery tickets’ : V Nandakumar, IRS officer

Young, suave, articulate and studious are the words that best describe V Nandakumar, an IRS officer.

Nandakumar, who is now an assistant director, investigation department, in the income tax office at Nungambakam, has become a role model for the city’s IAS aspirants, who usually throng his office for advice.

The childhood of this 2004-batch IRS officer was not a bed of roses. He was a school dropout. “I once sold lottery tickets, worked in mechanic shops, as well as television and radio repair centres. Initially I enjoyed the routine as there was no homework and I did not get scolded by teachers. But later, my friends’ parents did not allow me to mingle with them. That was the turning point,” he informs.

After battling dyslexia, Nandakumar secured 52 per cent in his 12th standard examinations. He knocked the doors of many colleges but was denied admission. Finally, he got admission to the English literature course at the Dr Ambedkar Arts and Science College.

“I was an average student and it was difficult to follow English but I worked hard and I was the only one who passed out of college with distinction in English literature,” he recalls. In 1997, Nandakumar started preparing for the UPSC examination. With sheer determination, he cracked this tough examination and now holds a prestigious post.
