The Chile Mine Miracle

Chile mine has taken over internet. It is now the 6th popular search term on Google. I want bring you the entire details of the averted disaster. CNN has brodcasted the entire resue operation liveThe world gripping scenario is explained in detail here.... Let us also look at the technology used to rescue the miners, who were buried underground for about 10 weeks. What did it take to bring these invincible out! How this Never-before-occurred scenario was dealt. CNN has brodcasted the entire resue operation live.

What caused the collapse?
It's not yet clear. Earlier this week, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said the cause of the roof collapse, about 1,100 feet (350 meters) below the surface, is being investigated. The mine is owned by the Compania Minera San Esteban Primera, which along with the National Mining and Geology Service, has come under criticism since the accident. In 2007, an explosion in the San Jose mine is reported to have killed several workers. Prinera has said the mine should not have been reopened without an escape route, according to media reports.

What has hampered rescue efforts so far?
Two days after the roof of the mine collapsed and miners became trapped, rescue efforts hit a snag. Workers had been descending through a ventilation shaft toward a shelter, about 2,200 feet (670 meters) below the surface where the survivors were believed to be, when another cave-in blocked the shaft. The next day, Aug. 8, rescue workers began drilling bore holes, about 6 inches in diameter (15 centimeters), to locate survivors, according to Reuters.
On Aug. 22, more than two weeks after the initial collapse, the first bore hole reached the survivors, all 33 of them, who passed up a note, translated as: "The 33 of us in the shelter are well," according to Reuters. They received emergency rations and lights to stave off the darkness in the 540 square foot (50 square meter) room where they are living.
Why will it take so long to get the miners out?
To reach the miners, rescue workers will need to drill through a lot of rock. "It must be areas of fairly hard rock where the drill's going to have to drill through some pretty tough stuff," said Jeffery Kravitz, a U.S. Mine Health and Safety Administration technical expert.
Nevertheless, the drill will need to carve out a 26-inch- (66-centimeter)- diameter hole to pull the miners out. This task will be much more time-consuming than creating the bore holes, which were drilled to communicate with the miners and provide them with food and water.
How did 33 men survive 17 days trapped in the mine?
"The reason those guys stayed alive so long is they were extremely disciplined."
Once communication was established with the ground earlier this week, the miners reportedly explained they had rationed their supplies, limiting themselves to two spoons of tuna, sips of milk, a bite of crackers and a morsel of peaches, stretching supplies intended to last two days over more than two weeks with leftovers.
"That is a starvation diet," Gonzales said in a telephone interview. "What these guys were doing, they were just keeping their level of nutrition just above starvation, I am sure they all lost a lot of weight."
How is a gold and copper mine different from a coal mine?
Coal mines are typically a lot shallower than gold and copper mines. In the United States, gold and copper mines can go as deep as 8,000 to 9,000 feet (2,400 to 2,700 meters), while the deepest coal mines are only around 2,000 to 2,200 feet (609 to 670 meters) deep, Kravitz said.
Coal mines also usually run horizontal to the earth's surface, while gold and copper mines can run any which way.

Robots to be used in fuel fabrication for Hyd N Reactors

Hyderabad-based Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) under the Department of Atomic Energy, has decided to induct robots in the fuel fabrication procedure for new nuclear power reactors which are huge in size, a top NFC official said. "We plan to introduce robots in the fuel fabrication activities as the proposed reactors are big in size.

Robots will also be needed for precision machining," NFC Senior Manager Meena Ravindran said here today. Meena, who was speaking at the ongoing Asian Nuclear Prospects 2010 (ANUP 2010), a conference on nuclear power in Asia, said her department was getting ready to fabricate fuels for different kinds of reactors- Light Water Reactors (LWR), Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) and Fast Breeder Reactors (FBR).

She said fuel fabrication facilities for imported LWRs would also be set up after discussions with overseas fuel suppliers. "The imported LWRs are expected to start operating by 2016," she said.

On Facebook, the more apps you add 'the more popular you are

An Oxford University-led research has found that users calculate their popularity quotient based on how many Facebook applications they add onto their profile.

The researchers found people display a herding instinct, making them want to use the same product as others - but only once it has reached a certain level of popularity.

"Users only appear to be influenced by the choices of other users above a certain level of popularity, and at that point, popularity drives future popularity. Below this threshold, the effects of social influence are imperceptible," The Scotsman quoted Dr Felix Reed-Tsochas from Oxford University's Institute for Science, Innovation and Society, as saying.

When the research was carried out, Facebook published a list of the most popular apps on its website, and also notified people when their friends downloaded a new one.

In the two-month study, carried out in 2007, the researchers tracked 100 million installations of apps. They found that the popularity of an app soared after it reached a rate of 55 applications a day.

Researchers are now considering if the study could have wider implications, suggesting for example that reviews of books on online retailers' websites could affect customers' purchases.

The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal today.

Indian Rupee Sign Added to Unicode Standard

rupee unicodeThe Indian Government and the Unicode Consortium deserves to be praised for getting this through so quickly.
The new design for the Rupee currency symbol was approved in July this year and within a span of less than three months, the symbol has been made part of the official Unicode Standard.
The Unicode Consortium, the organization that is responsible for maintaining the Unicode Standard, today formally announced Unicode Version 6.0 which includes some 2000+ new characters and one among them is the official Rupee currency sign for India.
It may however take some time before you can type the Rupee sign in your documents just like the $ or € symbols as none of the major font families, except for DejaVu fonts, have been upgraded to support Unicode Standard version 6.0.0 yet. You can use this page to determine if any of the fonts installed on your machine are capable of rendering the new Rupee character.
Once the families are upgraded, you’ll be able to use the HTML code ₹ in your web pages to display the new Rupee symbol or by pressing the Alt key followed by 20B9 in word processors.
The Indian IT department had initially proposed that the character code U+0971 be assigned to the Indian Rupee sign, as the code was within the range of Devnagri characters, but the Unicode Consortium approved the code U+20B9 which is the same range that is used for other currency symbols like Euro, Franc and Peso.

The Perfect Boss

There were about 70 scientists working on a very hectic project. All of them were really frustrated due to the pressure of work and the demands of their boss, but everyone was loyal to him and did not think of quitting the job.

One day, one scientist came to his boss and told him, "Sir, I have promised to my children that I will take them to the exhibition going on in our township. So I want to leave the office at 5 30 pm." His boss replied, "OK, You're permitted to leave the office early today".

The Scientist started working. He continued his work after lunch. As usual he got involved to such an extent that he looked at his watch when he felt he was close to completion. The time was 8.30 PM. suddenly he remembered of the promise he had given to his children. He looked for his boss, He was not there. Having told him in the morning itself, he closed everything and left for home. Deep within himself, he was feeling guilty for having disappointed his children. >>
He reached home. Children were not there. His wife alone was sitting in the hall and reading magazines. The situation was explosive; any talk would boomerang on him. His wife asked him "Would you like to have coffee or shall I straight away serve dinner if you are hungry." The man replied "If you would like to have coffee, I too will have; but, what about Children?" Wife replied "You don't know? Your manager came here at 5.15 PM and has taken the children to the exhibition".

What had really happened was ......: The boss who granted him permission was observing him working seriously at 5.00 PM. He thought to himself, this person will not leave the work, but if he has promised his children they should enjoy the visit to exhibition. So he took the lead in taking them to exhibition the boss does not have to do it every time. But once it is done, loyalty is established. That is why all the scientists at Thumba continued to work under their boss even though the stress was tremendous.

By the way, can you hazard a guess as to who the boss was..?

He was none other than
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam,
Former-President of India...

Browser wars -Netscape,IE,Firefox

If there was Word War, Cold War, and the Gulf War, we also have the “Mac and PC war”, and of course the “Browser War”.
In the 1990s the only browser was Internet Explorer. But around 2000 there comes about Netscape. It was famous before, AOL (American Online) acquired Netscape Communications Corporation in 1999 backing Netscape with fund to further perfect the art and user requirements for an easier and personalized surfing. Unfortunately Netscape ceased its operation but older and the last version that was released is still available for use and for download (Click here for Netscape downloads). I was not able to use and did not download and install the latest Netscape browser that was ever released (Netscape Navigator 9.0.0.6). I just remembered my brother saying, “Netscape is the best”, way back in 2001.
In 1999, at the time of AOL’s acquisition of Netscape, the team had already begun their work on converting their flagship product – the Netscape Communicator web suite – into an open source software. Does “open source software” ring any bell to you? Anything yet? Firefox!

“And we’re an open source software project! whose code has been used as a platform for some of the Internet’s most innovative projects.”
-Firefox

“At the time of the acquisition, the Netscape team had begun working on converting their flagship product – the Netscape Communicator web suite – into open source software, under a new name: Mozilla.”
-Netscape
Yes, Mozilla foundation has its cornerstone with AOL/Netscape. AOL played an important role in the launch of the Netscape 6 Browser, the first Mozilla based browser.  Netscape/AOL kept on funding the development and marketing efforts of all Netscape branded softwares. Came 2003 where an independent foundation was created to promote and continue the development of the open source web suite.

“AOL was a major source of support for the Mozilla Foundation and the company continued to develop versions of the Netscape browser based on the work of the foundation.”
-AOL

To end this I would like to leave a full quote of the last 2 paragraphs of what AOL/Netscape has to say with the handing over of the Browser crown.
“While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Recently, support for the Netscape browser has been limited to a handful of engineers tasked with creating a skinned version of Firefox with a few extensions.
AOL’s current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel it’s the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.“

The Browser war is still very alive today with key players  Internet Explorer (Flagship: IE 8, up and coming IE 9), Firefox (Flagship: Firefox 3.6.2, up and coming Firefox 4) , Google Chrome (Flagship: Chrome Alpha, under development Chrome Beta), Opera (Flagship: Opera 10.51), and Safari
